Made from 100% Petite Sirah that was completely destemmed and aged in 2- to 3-year-old barrels, the 2012 Petite Sirah Fox Family Vineyard is thick and chewy, with serious concentration and depth in its blackberry, plum, spice, caramelized meats and sweet oak-driven aromas and flavors. While a lot of winemakers struggled with concentration in 2012, that's certainly not the case here, and this stays remarkably pure and fresh while carrying serious amounts of fruit and texture. It's delicious now in a primary sort of way, but will evolve gracefully for another 15+ years.

Vinous: 90 points

(no new oak): Saturated ruby. Intense black and blue fruit aromas are complicated by violet and black pepper, with a subtle mineral overtone. Sappy boysenberry and bitter cherry flavors gain sweetness with air and pick up notes of allspice and licorice. Finishes smooth and broad, with the blue fruit and spice notes echoing strongly. In an elegant, almost feminine style for this grape.
