The 2007 Chianti Classico Castello di Ama is fabulous. There is so much going on in the glass, as endless layers of perfumed dark red fruit caress the palate in stunning style. The wines precision, elegance and overall sense of harmony are all first class. Smoke, tar and roses add the final layers of complexity on the finish. Today the wine is mostly remarkable for its exceptional silkiness; readers will have to wait at least a few years for the aromatics and flavors to develop tertiary nuances. The Castello is a wine that sets a new standard for what is possible within the Chianti Classico appellation. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2027. Castello di Ama remains a reference-point producer in Tuscany. My visit to the property last year culminated with the stunning 1988 Apparita, still in great shape after all these years. The house style seeks a rich, bold expression of fruit that requires significant bottle aging to reach its apogee, even if the wines can be very showy when young. Make no mistake about it, these are some the most pedigreed wines being made anywhere.Importer: The Sorting Table, Napa, CA; tel. (707) 603-1461

This red is concentrated, with brambly cherry, raspberry and spice flavors. Sweet at its core, this is tight now, ending in firm tannins. Really blossoms after an hour, turning silkier and lingering beautifully on the aftertaste. Best from 2014 through 2025. 70 cases imported.

A classy red, with beautiful floral, plum and chocolate character on the nose and palate. Full and very velvety. The finish lasts for minutes. Love this wine. Drink now or hold for many years to come. The model for Chianti Classico.

The estate's 2007 Chianti Classico Vigneto La Casuccia is deep, dark and sensual with a warm core of fruit that radiates from its poised frame. This shows superb density, richness and finesse from start to finish, with exceptional depth and fabulous overall balance. It is without question a wine for the future, but the richness of the fruit and the extraordinary silkiness of the tannins bode for an immensely rewarding life ahead. Sweet floral notes add freshness and lift to the finish. What a wine!
