Incredible aromas of violets with hints of tar and black licorice. Turns to sandalwood. Full body, with big silky tannins and a powerful backbone of fruit and acidity. New wood is coming through now with dense fruit and tannin structure. Needs more time to soften. Try in 2017.

Bright full ruby. Strong oak tones to the aromas of black raspberry, blueberry, plum, exotic spices and graphite minerality. Plush, pliant and sweet more open-knit than the 2012 but then this is two years older. A bit more exotic, figgy and liqueur-like, finishing with big, ripe, palate-saturating tannins and excellent dark berry persistence. I find the tannins of the 2012 Grand Vin to be more refined, even if the wine is younger. -Stephen Tanzer
