    COMPLEX AND LUMINOUS GUALTALLARY MALBEC
    FOR UNDER $35!

"With names like Antinori and Morescalchi, it’s not surprising that the Malbecs of Altos Las Hormigas offer deep complexity and elegance. For over two decades, this team of Italian winemakers have been working to build up Mendoza’s quality and expression of Malbec by teaming up with PhD and Terrior Expert, Pedro Parra, to source the best sites for their terrior-driven Malbecs. We’re pleased to have secured a limited amount of the 2014 ‘Gualtallary’, recently rated 95 points by Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate, and are offering it for over 20% less than the release price! Hands down, this is the best Malbec I’ve tasted this year! Don’t miss out on this limited and exquisite wine." – Glen Knight, The Wine House (6/26/17)

    FROM THE IMPORTER

These Malbec vines grow in Gualtallary’s loamy soils, lying at 1,300 meters above sea level. Limestones covered pebbles and gravels occupy 50-60% of the soil volume, with a high percentage of free calcium carbonate in the profile granting to the wine a chalky, fresh minerality. 3% of clay in the fine matrix allow Malbec to express fresh fruit flavors, for a strong but well-integrated roundness on the palate.

The grapes go through a double selection process and are released by gravity into small stainless steel tanks for pre-fermentation maceration at 5°C for 7 days. The alcoholic fermentation begins with indigenous yeasts at 24°C for 15 days. In order to maintain careful, gentle handling, pumping is not used; the cap is rotated by manual pigeage throughout the fermentation, and once this is completed, post-fermentation maceration begins for 4 days. The wine was matured in 3,500 ltr untoasted Foudres for 18 months, and 12 further months in the bottle.

Tasting Notes: This is a WOW wine that tantalizes the senses. A luminous, deep ruby Malbec with specks of blue and purple, the nose will pour out of your glass with notes of olives, dark fruit, black pepper, nutmeg and thyme. The palate confirms the nose, but give way to a layer of bright red fruit. The backbone of this wine is strong, with well-integrated acid and tannin structure. There seems to be no end to this wines finish. It is long with fresh, chalky tannins. Amazing aging potential.

    About Altos Las Hormigas

Wine from Mendoza is more than just Malbec: it is the reflection of a know-how, a tradition and an origin. Founded in 1995 by a consortium of prominent Italian winemakers, including Alberto Antonini of Antinori and Antonio Morescalchi, Altos Las Hormigas has always been evolving. Their Terroir Project is working towards the creation of an appellation system in Mendoza, while showing Malbec’s diversity of expression according to its origin. Based on this philosophy, their portfolio shows the tremendous versatility of the Malbec, from fresh, fruit driven Mendoza Clásico from Lujan de Cuyo to the structured and mineral Malbec Reserve from the Uco Valley. Along with Malbec, Altos Las Hormigas has been crafting Bonarda for 10 years, Argentina’s second most planted variety. They display its joyful and delicate nature under the classic line Colonia Las Liebres.

In 2012, Altos Las Hormigas took a significant step in their ongoing evolution from boutique value winery to the terroir-driven, serious player in the world of Malbec that they are today. After seeing the potential for wines of consequence in the Uco Valley, the team decided to stop using new oak and small barriques for all of their wines; instead going with older, untoasted, large oak foudres across the board. This decision has allowed for much more expression and elegance, especially on the sublime Appellation series of )0.0?,1Ä))2017-06-22 15:45:41.023èëÿtf8))2017-07-15 10:42:55.150!))44.0,1ÄmÄ))0.0,1ad!!))“,1!¸))1899-12-31 00:00:00.000))1899-12-31 00:00:00.000287))0.0Ø,1üÿ))2017-07-15 10:42:55.150¸())2017-06-22 15:01:23.197L`))?ð

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: 95 points

“The other appellation Malbec comes from the hottest place (not in temperature, but in terms of market demand) in the Valle de Uco, where the grapes for the 2014 Malbec Appellation Gualtallary are grown. This is significantly cheaper than most wines of this quality. I was a little disappointed with the performance of this wine in 2013 and was looking forward to 2014. The soils here are rich in calcium carbonate, but in the shape of caliche (a kind of marl with plenty of chalky material, iron and clay), which provide for more tannic wines. The destemmed grapes fermented in small concrete vats with indigenous yeasts without the use of any pumps. The wine matured in used, untoasted 3,500-liter French oak foudres for a period of some 18 months. It feels fresher, perhaps a little herbal and definitely more ethereal than the Altamira. Yes, it's more tannic, because the tannins are abundant, but they feel very fine-grained. This year I favor Gualtallary over Altamira. There is more complexity here. 9,333 bottles produced and filled after a light filtration in January 2016.” -Luis Gutiérrez

Spicy and earthy with hints of bark and light plums on the nose and palate. Full body, firm tannins and a fresh and clean finish.
