Product Description

Growing Season: 2014 was another classic vintage. A mild winter and spring caused an early bud break followed by consistent temperatures throughout the summer, promoting even ripening. We had ample hang time which in turn yielded intense varietal character and a rich texture.

Harvest Dates | Brix: September 4 to September 23 | 22.6˚ average

Appellation: Sonoma Coast

Sites: 69% Martinelli Charles Ranch Vineyard; 31% Platt Vineyard

Soil & Clonal Selection: This is the seventh vintage to be dominated by the Martinelli Charles Ranch on Bohan Dillon Road. The vineyard was planted in 1982 by George Hastings Charles (Lee Jr.’s maternal grandfather, called PaPa). The soil is Goldridge and Josephine; Goldridge comes from sandstone and Josephine is from shale. The vineyard was planted mixed Wente with other Chardonnay clones. Platt Vineyard is our coolest site and has Goldridge Loam soil uplifted from ancient ocean floor. In 2003, it was planted with Wente selection Chardonnay collected from one of our Hyde Vineyard blocks, the rows are densely planted (3′ and 4′ by 6′) on low-vigor rootstock (420A).

Varietal Compositon: 100% Chardonnay

Fermentation: We press the whole clusters for delicacy. Native-yeast and full native malolactic fermentation take place in barrel, with sur lies bâtonnage.

Aging: After aging 12 months in 15% new French oak barrels (François Frères and Demptos), this Chardonnay was fined for clarity and texture in tank during the following harvest. It was then bottled without filtration in February, 2016.

Cases: 7,350

Alcohol: 14.5%

Release Date: April 2017

Vinous: 90 points

The 2014 Chardonnay (Sonoma Coast) offers good up front intensity in a mid-weight style that will drink well with minimal cellaring. Lemon confit, orchard fruit, chamomile and lightly oaked notes are laced into the silky finish. This is a very pretty, bright Sonoma Coast Chardonnay.

Wine Enthusiast: 90 points

This wine is made from two exceptionally cool coastal sites: Platt, a single-vineyard in its own right; and Martinelli Charles Ranch Vineyard. The wine follows suit, allowing for a concentrated take on golden apple and stony minerality, the nose crisp and focused in salty, floral notes. -Virginie Boone
