The 2016 Chardonnay VGW ("Very Good White") was made using what Chris Hermann calls the "black Chardonnay" technique and aged in 30% new French oak. It has a nose of struck flint, red apple flesh and lemon peel with notes of dried hay, toast, white mushroom and white blossom. Medium-bodied, it’s savory and earthy in the mouth with good density of flavor, redolent of saline, crushed shell, toasted almonds and honey over a core of warm red apple and citrus. It has wonderful juicy acidity and a pleasant phenolic texture on the long, lively, energetic finish. This is a great savory expression of Chardonnay.
