The WSET Level 1 Award in Wines is a suggested prerequisite for the WSET Level 2 Award in Wines and Spirits course. Students learn the basics of wine in this entry-level course in a format specially designed for those with no previous wine knowledge. It is strongly recommended for consumers or those new to wine, and focuses on the main styles of wines available, tasting technique, wine and food pairing as well as wine service and etiquette.

The 6-hour course includes an exam with 30 multiple-choice questions to be answered in 45 minutes, printed study guide, tasting of 10 wines, food pairing exercises and exam fee. Successful candidates receive a certificate and lapel pin for the internationally-recognized WSET Level 1 Award in Wines.

COURSE SYNOPSIS
o Wine Tasting: Taste and describe wines using the WSET Systematic Approach to Tasting
o Food and Wine Matching: A practical guide to the key considerations when matching food and wine successfully
o Wine Service and Storage: Learn the correct way to store and serve wine and recognize common faults found in wine
o Types and Styles of Wine: Learn about what makes wines taste different
o Grape Varieties: Learn about the characteristics and styles of wines produced from the main grape varieties
o Main White Grape Varieties: Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, Riesling
o Main Black Grape Varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Syrah/Shiraz
o Named Wines: Champagne, Sancerre, Chablis, Burgundy, Bordeaux, Prosecco, Cava, Beaujolais, Côtes du Rhône, Chianti, Rioja, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Sauternes, Sherry, Port
o Number of Wines Tasted: 10 wines will be tasted as part of the course
o Study Materials: Students will receive the Level 1 Award in Wines Study Guide
o Duration of Course: 6 hours inclusive of examination
o Examination: 30 multiple-choice questions to be answered in 45 minutes. A mark of 70% required to pass
o Certification: All students who pass will be issued with a certificate suitable for framing and a lapel pin
