The 2018 Meursault 1er Cru Clos des Bouchères is also very charming this year wafting from the glass with aromas of pear white flowers clear honey almond paste and pastry cream. On the palate it's medium to full-bodied textural but incisive with less flesh on its bones than the Charmes but a racier more dynamic spine of acidity concluding with a precise finish. This is another superlative Clos des Bouchères in the making. It's always a pleasure tasting with Jean-Marc Roulot who addressed the subject of yields in the 2018 vintage with refreshing candor. "For us this is the biggest crop since 1982—we produced even more wine in 2018 than in 1999!" he told me. That meant that Roulot was able to be selective at the press; after the usual gentle foulage his 2018 press cycle began with fully 45 minutes at 0.2 bars which liberated a great deal of effectively free run juice with concomitantly low pH. When barreling down Roulot also opted to keep more lees than usual to nourish the wines during their élevage. The results are very fine indeed. Open and expressive when I tasted them in December I expect them to gain in tension with another winter on the lees. Roulot thinks they will age very well—and Roulot's 1982s certainly did—so he intends to keep an appreciable quantity back at the domaine for later release.
