Description

96 Points *Burghound Don't Miss!*

"Subtle though hardly invisible wood frames the intensely floral-suffused nose of spiced essence of white orchard fruit and a similar hint of exotic tea. The imposingly-scaled flavors aren't as dense as those of the Bâtard but they are finer and more precise while displaying equally good power on the markedly more complex and strikingly persistent finale. This youthfully austere effort is compact, backward and even firmer and as such, I would strongly advise not touching a bottle for at least a decade though this elegant beauty should have no trouble repaying twice that."

There's a single 250-liter barrel of Colin's 2022 Montrachet Grand Cru, refurbished with a mixture of new and used staves to avoid entirely new oak. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of pear, peach and confit citrus mingled with white flowers, mint and pastry, it's full-bodied, satiny and seamless, with a layered, multidimensional core of fruit and a long, mineral finish. The 2022 vintage is the finest I can remember tasting at Domaine Marc Colin—and with years such as 2017 and 2020, the last decade has been mostly benevolent. As readers will remember, now that the domaine is smaller following his two brothers' secessions, he is able to be ultra-precise about harvest date, sampling parcel by parcel, he tells me, and small volumes of wine mean longer élevage is feasible too. Percentages of new oak are modest, but foudres and larger barrels are also out of the picture, Damien finding most coopers' 228-liter barrels more consistent and in any case, better adapted to vinifying smaller quantities.
